Southface and ENERGY STAR

Southface participates with the EPA's ENERGY STAR Program through our training of home energy professionals and professionals in the verified HVAC installation program in addition to utilizing  ENERGY STAR as a foundation for our high-performance building certifications. Residential initiatives like the ENERGY STAR certificationHome Performance with ENERGY STAR, or the commercial benchmarking tools supported in the ENERGY STAR Portfolio manager highlight our work.
The ENERGY STAR Verified HVAC Installation program is a pilot initiative that is outlined below.

ENERGY STAR Verified HVAC Installation Program

According to ENERGY STAR, nearly half of all HVAC systems are incorrectly installed! Getting the best performance from a new HVAC system depends on more than just choosing the right equipment. The quality of the system’s design and installation can have an enormous effect on its performance and reliability, not to mention your comfort. The ENERGY STAR Verified HVAC Installation (ESVI) program promotes the proper design and installation of heating and cooling systems specifically for the existing homes marketplace. An ENERGY STAR Verified HVAC Installation is the best way to be sure you’re getting the right equipment and a proper installation to get the most from your new system.

How it Works

Southface’s ESVI program is intended to ensure customers receive the benefits of properly designed and installed HVAC systems.  Participating contractors work with their clients to design and install HVAC systems that meet ESVI requirements.  Each ESVI project must follow a rigorous third-party quality assurance verification procedure to ensure key performance metrics have been met.  The following four (4) key elements must be addressed in every ESVI installation:

  1. HVAC systems are properly sized to meet the heating and/or cooling load of the home
  2. HVAC equipment is ENERGY STAR certified and properly selected and matched
  3. HVAC equipment is properly installed and commissioned
  4. The HVAC distribution (air duct) system meets minimum performance requirements

Once a job has met all requirements, customers receive a certificate of verification documenting program compliance.

Contractors participating in the Southface ESVI program use automated systems to provide ongoing monitoring of the performance of ESVI certified systems. With ESVI verified systems, customers get the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their systems are designed, selected, and installed to maximize performance, while participating contractors receive the quality assurance and technical support they need to provide the best possible service to their clients.
