For Immediate Release

ATLANTA, GA – March 20, 2020 – Southface Institute and the Piedmont Park Conservancy are hosting an Earth Hour Virtual Celebration on March 28, 2020, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. as part of a yearly global appointment when people in over 180 countries turn off their lights for one hour in solidarity for the planet’s future. In a time when we’re being asked to distance ourselves for the sake of community health and safety, Earth Hour gives us an opportunity to come together with those nearest to us and with others around the world to show our commitment to a more sustainable lifestyle.

“Earth Hour is all about coming together to creatively highlight how a more sustainable way of living is possible and enjoyable, starting with small changes in our everyday lives. As Atlanta’s oldest sustainability nonprofit, Southface has been helping our region recognize the benefits of energy efficiency for decades, and this year, since we are all home anyway, we are looking forward to sharing this initiative with our extended community,” said Southface Institute President Andrea Pinabell.

“Piedmont Park is known for its variety of activities and events. In this time when face-to-face gatherings are limited out of concern for public safety, we’re excited to offer a virtual gathering place for the Atlanta community to come together around resource conservation,” said Mark Banta, President and CEO of the Piedmont Park Conservancy.

Attendees Can Show Off Their Creativity

Participants in the Facebook event can post photos or videos of their creative approaches to Earth Hour and be eligible to win a free one-year membership for either Southface Institute or the Piedmont Park Conservancy.

Ideas for how to celebrate Earth Hour in this time of social distancing can be found on EarthHour.org, including enjoying a dinner in the dark, playing board games, reading a book by candlelight, camping in your backyard or living room, or doing a shadow puppet play with your little ones.
