Southface & the 2026 MLK Jr. Service Project

Several Southfacers spent one, two, or even three days in the field over the January 17-19 weekend, volunteering with the MLK Jr. Service Project team in Decatur. Founded in 2003, the MLK Jr. Service Project was created to help alleviate economic pressures faced by Decatur’s elderly neighbors—ensuring they can safely remain in their homes while improving comfort, health, and energy efficiency.

Led entirely by volunteers and provided at no cost to homeowners, this year’s projects included weatherization to improve energy performance, essential home repairs, and yardwork. The annual effort honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through meaningful service and community partnership.

As part of metro Atlanta’s vibrant nonprofit community, Southface is proud to serve as a committed partner—working alongside neighbors, fellow nonprofits, elected officials, and volunteers to make a tangible impact.

Current and former Southfacers Mike Barcik and Frank Burdette have been with the program since the beginning, assessing homes, drafting work scopes, acquiring materials and leading lots of volunteers. This year, they were joined by current Southfacers Amelia Godfrey, James Marlow, Nathan Bessette, and Lauren Gloster, as well as former Southfacers Scott Lee, Howard Katzman, Cyrus Bhedwar, Chris Theal, and Joe Bauman. Like last year, Mike, Frank and Scott captained the weatherization efforts on three houses utilizing the skills of about 40 volunteers (out of 900 who participated in the event).

Among Mike’s notable guests were DeKalb County Commissioner Ted Terry and Georgia Public Service Commission member Peter Hubbard, who worked tirelessly sealing ductwork with mastic and retrofitting 22 recessed can lights. Southface President & CEO James Marlow also rolled up his sleeves, spending time prepping for insulation in the attic and sealing wall penetrations in the crawlspace.

Together, these efforts reflect Southface’s ongoing commitment to service, equity, and practical solutions that strengthen homes, support neighbors, and honor Dr. King’s enduring vision of community uplift.

A special thanks to current and former SFers:
