Home Weatherization & Resiliency Training in Mobile, Alabama
Southface’s Education team had a great trip to Mobile, Alabama where they hosted a Home Weatherization & Resiliency Training with Gulf Coast Creation Care (GCCC) on November 13th. We were grateful to be invited to speak to GCCC community members as they recognize the challenges and rewards of stewardship, like us at Southface. Quoting from their Work Statement, GCCC says,
“The challenge of the stewardship of creation is to put into action those practices that we know to be right – recycle, carpool, make your home more energy efficient, avoid drive-thrus, raise the thermostat in the summer and lower it in the winter…the list goes on.“
The trainees embodied and embraced this stewardship through their interest and hands-on learning around retrofitting buildings to make their community more energy efficient and lower the cost of residents’ homes and offices. At Southface, we recognize and value stewardship at a community level, and are inspired by others doing the same.

The Southface Home Weatherization & Resiliency Training covers important residential energy efficiency and indoor air quality improvements that individuals can use to increase a home’s resiliency and comfort, while also saving energy and reducing utility costs. Southface has taught this training across the Southeast, from the coasts of Florida to the mountains of North Carolina, and we were excited to bring it to Mobile!

The training opens with a section covering the fundamentals of building science, approaching the house as a system by connecting heat, air, and moisture movements. The training will then discuss the importance of combustion safety, before highlighting ways to improve energy efficiency and cost-savings with insulation, air sealing, and ductwork improvements.
The training will wrap up with various hands-on activities that allow students to practice many of the techniques and upgrades that our instructors highlight throughout the training. Trainees had the opportunity to practice what they learned with hands-on activities. They worked on sealing gaps and leaks, insulation, connecting ducts, and other skills, while trainers provided guidance, tips and tricks, and some silliness.
