East Point City Hall Project

Green Building

The City of East Point encourages and welcomes sustainable business development that supports economic growth and improves quality of life for its citizens. Last month, East Point city officials broke ground for a $15.8 million City Hall project. It is expected that the new City Hall will spur economic growth and create jobs. This approximately 32,000 square foot facility will include new city offices, a multipurpose City Council Chamber and an additional 2,400 square feet of space for future expansion. The City Hall project will explore sustainable strategies, including EarthCraft Light Commercial, for implementation.

EarthCraft Light Commercial (ECLC) is a regional green building certification program offering third-party recognition for environmentally responsible design and construction practices for small-scale, or “light,” commercial buildings in the Southeast. The program focuses on site planning, energy and water efficiency, building durability, and improved occupant health and productivity. ECLC is best suited for commercial building projects sized 50,000 square feet or less.

Some of the sustainability goals for the City Hall project are:
• Parking for carpools, electric vehicles and bikes
• Enhancing the facility with local artwork
• Incorporating human to nature interaction
• Energy efficient systems and fixtures
• Community-oriented space as well as quiet space
• Design that encourages the use of stair to improve health of occupants
• Daylighting of interior spaces

These goals will help set the framework for the design of future buildings. The construction is expected to be complete by fall 2018.
