Born in 1848 to parents who escaped slavery, Latimer became a key figure in lighting optimization.  As a self-taught expert draftsman and inventor, Latimer improved the carbon filament for the incandescent light bulb, making electric lighting more affordable and efficient. Additionally, Latimer taught English and mechanical drawing to recent immigrants at the Henry Street Settlement in New York, demonstrating his commitment to accessible education. Latimer’s work has paved the way for modern building technologies that enhance energy efficiency and operational effectiveness.

Carrying Latimer’s Ethos Forward Through BIT Building

“We create our future by well improving present opportunities, however few and small they are.” —Lewis Latimer

Latimer’s dedication to making the most of every technology and opportunity echoes the principles behind Southface’s work, especially in our Building Improvement Toolkit (BIT) program. BIT Building simplifies facility operations and maintenance (O&M) so that anyone can improve and earn recognition for sustainability without breaking the bank or wasting resources. Through 16 Best Practices, the digital platform breaks down educational barriers to energy, water, waste, and cost savings.

Small Changes Can Have a Big Impact

Latimer’s legacy teaches us that even the smallest innovations can have a profound impact. With BIT Building, we focus on simple actions, such as optimizing lighting systems, improving insulation, or implementing water-saving fixtures, that can lead to substantial benefits. These improvements not only reduce operational costs but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future for all.

During Black History Month and all year, we encourage you to draw inspiration from Lewis Latimer’s resilience and ingenuity. Learn more about his life and work at the Lewis Latimer House website and museum.
