Kendeda Challenge Boosts
Support for Southface Eco Office
In a generous gesture of support for our mission and
the Southface Eco Office Capital Campaign, the Kendeda
Fund has proposed a challenge grant in the amount of
$375,000. While Southface has until next summer to raise
a matching sum, Kendeda has agreed to release the challenge
funds pro-rata as additional commitments are made. Southface's
goal is for the project to be completed in time for
the November, 2005 Greenbuild Conference.
If you would like information on how you or your company
might help us claim this challenge and make the Southface
Eco Office a reality, contact our Development Director,
Marci Reed, at 404/872-3549 ext 124. |

Governor, President
of Ford launch Eco-SUV at Piedmont Park
| Rolled out at a press event in Atlanta
in September, the Ford Escape Hybrid is touted
to produce less than one pound of hydrocarbon
emissions over the course of 100,000 miles.
Other features highlighted are that 85 percent
of the vehicle's parts are recyclable and
the vehicle has an EPA mileage rating of
35-40 mpg (city). |

The
Escape Hybrid is a full hybrid, which means
that at low speeds and when stopped the gasoline
engine can automatically shut off and the
vehicle can be driven in electric-only mode
(see power train insert above). The electric
motor in the Escape Hybrid is capable of
powering the vehicle up to 25 miles per hour. |

Energy Codes Resource
Center offers a one-stop shop for information on building
energy codes
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the
Building Energy Codes Resource Center-a comprehensive,
online resource that links users to energy codes and
beyond-code construction techniques and technologies.
The interactive Website offers detailed information
on hundreds of topics ranging from how to frame window
headers for additional insulation to the latest research
on mold and moisture. Currently, most of the information
is residentially focused.
The Resource Center is a compilation of information
from the Building Energy Codes Program (BECP) archives,
ENERGY STAR(r) and Building America websites as well
as additional information from building scientists and
code groups. While visiting the Resource Center, users
also can link to REScheck(tm), BECP's energy code compliance
software that is now used in many states. Information
is presented in a variety of formats on the website,
including:
| • |
Articles-factsheets, reports, and general information
about energy codes and above code resources |
| • |
Graphics-diagrams and photos that illustrate concepts
related to energy codes and above-code construction
|
| • |
Online tools-interactive webbased applications
that guide users through energy code or above-code
processes. |
| • |
Videos-short clips that discuss building science,
energy code, and above-code subjects |
| • |
Presentations-PowerPoint documents detailing energy
code topics and above-code presentations |
Discover the wealth of information yourself by going
to http://energycode.pnl.gov/cocoon/energy/.
