Southface Launches Online Training Program
By Anne Rogers, Southface Fellow
To access and explore the free training program, go to Southface’s Online Training Website www.southfaceonlinetraining.org
Southface officially introduced four new modules to its online green building training program. Underwritten by the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), the project entitled, “Building Technical Assistance for Federal Facilities in the Southeast” was developed to assist government officials in achieving federal energy goals set forth by executive order, legislation and agency direction. |
 |
The modules, written by building science experts with extensive green building knowledge and experience, are beneficial for building science professionals, facility managers and building owners who are interested in retrofitting or greening their buildings.
Synopsis

John Adams, P.E., formerly of DOE, currently of the Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute |
HVAC Management for High Performance Existing Buildings
The outcome objectives for this module will be to learn how to verify HVAC system performance and set operating goals that comply with LEED-EB requirements and the Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU). The module will help federal employees understand HVAC system design strategies for building renovations and new construction that give the biggest “bang for the buck” by optimizing performance and reducing energy costs by 20 percent or more. |
Adrienne Thorpe of the Pollution Prevention Assistance Division of Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Denise Grimm of Southface
|
Water Efficiency for High Performance Commercial and Institutional Buildings
The Water Efficiency course will give an overview of indoor water conservation measures that will help federal design teams and facilities managers comply with the Energy Policy Act of 1992, the Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings MOU and LEED® standards. Indoor water savings will cover the best technologies and percent water use reductions possible with regard to toilets, urinals, faucets, kitchen equipment and HVAC systems. |

Economic Benefits of High Performance Buildings
Susan Garrett, LEED A.P., MSLTS, of Southface
Often decision-makers are hesitant to explore high performance or “green” features for their buildings because they are concerned about up-front costs and do not clearly understand the potential for economic gains accompanied with successful green building strategies. This module presents research and tools, combined with a conceptual framework, to help owners and designers overcome economic barriers to green building in the Federal sector and beyond. Among the many topics discussed are:
- Economic barriers and benefits of high performance buildings
- Federal mandates and incentives available for high performance building implementation
- Using strategic economic planning from project conception to design and construction, in order to offset up-front costs with short and long-term paybacks
- Altering the design and budget focus to ensure long-term sustainability of the building into operations and maintenance
- Translating the benefits and results of green building into economic returns

Building Commissioning: Ensuring High Performance Green Buildings
Building Commissioning helps prevent building failures and optimizes performance by creating a documented process that ensures quality throughout programming, design, construction and operation. This course provides an overview of building commissioning, fundamental commissioning for LEED and shows model documents for requests for qualifications, contracts and training protocols. |

Richard Heinisch, FIES, LC, LEED A.P. of Acuity Lighting

|
Basics of Daylighting in a Green Environment
This module offers an overview of daylighting principles, design strategies and technologies. The course also discusses common mistakes and provides links to additional resources including free daylighting software. |
