Jennifer Adams, - Georgia Department of Community Affairs

Jennifer Adams is a construction manager at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ Office of Affordable Housing.  She has been at Georgia DCA for 1 ½ years, helping to shape architectural design policy and oversee the construction of affordable housing across Georgia.  Before coming to Georgia DCA, she worked both in the commercial general contracting industry and in the tax/audit field of construction cost segregation.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a pending Master of Arts degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Architectural History.

Mike Barcik- Southface
Mike Barcik is a senior research engineer and the Director of Technical Services at Southface Energy Institute. His areas of expertise include energy performance modeling, design reviews, building diagnostics, and technical training. A graduate from Georgia Tech with BS/MS degrees in mechanical engineering, he has conducted research in high-efficiency mechanical systems and has conducted hundreds of workshops and charrettes on high-performance residential and commercial buildings, including over 40 week-long HERS trainings. He is an active member of the State of Georgia Energy Code Task Force, a LEED accredited professional, and a USGBC LEED Faculty member.

Sue Barnett, - Sustainable Design Specialist

How Local Government can Advance Sustainable Development

 

 

Sue Barnett teaches LEED Rating System for the US Green Building Council and offers customized training for green building. In her practice, Sue facilitates green design serving often as the LEED Accredited Professional and consults on sustainable business practices. She has 26 years experience in architecture, 17 years directly in green building and 21 years experience in environmental protection. Sue has consulted on 86 green rated commercial and institutional projects and written policies for implementation of Green Building Programs. In addition to consulting, Sue works as an auditor for Scientific Certification Systems providing third-party certification for sustainable harvested wood.

Formerly with the City of Austin's Green Building Program, she founded the Commercial Green Building Program, the first program of its kind
offering cash and development incentives to foster ecologically responsible development, and spearheaded the application of these standards to the City's own institutional buildings, including the Austin Airport. The Green Building Program won the United Nations Local Government Initiative Award at the UN Earth Summit in 1992.

Working through Korea Institute for Energy Research, Sue helped write green building policy for the country of South Korea and consulted on the first Green Building in South Korea. She also helped establish the Japan Green Building Council and helped modify Austin’s Green Building Rating System for Japan. Other green project consulting ranges widely from toll booth design in Illinois to Austin Java commercial finish out within Austin City Hall.

Sue co-founded an educational and support organization for builders called the Sustainable Building Coalition. And taught residential green building practices at Austin Community College for several years. She participated on several committees in order to foster “Green Building” including LEED and served as the chairperson for ASTM E50.06 committee on commercial green buildings. Currently on the USGBC Central Texas/Balcones Chapter steering Committee and Chair of the Education Committee.

Denis Blackburne, - Melaver

The Color of Money is Green…demystifying the costs and benefits of green building

 

As CFO of Melaver, Inc., Denis brings a wealth of financial and business expertise to Melaver, along with an international background in complex financial transactions. Denis does all the things one would expect of a company’s CFO: he is responsible for the ongoing management of the company’s financial division and oversees overall financial strategic planning, as well as relations with the financial community, investors, and shareholders. With Martin Melaver and Colin Coyne, Denis is a third member of Melaver’s Senior Management Group, coordinating the efforts of brokerage services, while contributing actively to the visioning and implementation of Melaver, Inc’s growth strategies. 

Denis’ unique ability to understand all business aspects of a transaction, including market and sustainable implications, brings uncommon strength to the CFO function. Before joining the Melaver team, Denis spent more than 20 years in senior financial positions with both publicly traded companies and family owned businesses. He has served as VP Finance for the Tetra Laval / Tetra Pak Group in Switzerland, Singapore and Chicago, and as a high level financial analyst with DuPont de Nemours in Geneva and London, and as a financial manager with Dow Chemical. Denis graduated from Geneva University majoring in Business Administration and Marketing. He received his MBA from the JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

In 2007, Denis was newly elected to the Board of Directors of Southface Energy Institute in Atlanta.  In Savannah, he serves on the Finance Committee of the American Red Cross, is a board member of the Small Business Assistance Corp., the CFO Controller's Council, and serves on the Board of Trustees and as Treasurer of the Historic Savannah Foundation. Denis has been a featured speaker at leading conferences on the value of triple bottom line accounting and reporting practices. He is LEED 2.1 accredited.

Sean Bleything - Southface

EarthCraft Light Commercial:  Filling the Gaps

 

Sean is the EarthCraft House Field Operations Manager. He joined Southface in the fall of 2005 as an EarthCraft House Inspector. Originally from Hutchinson, Kansas, he attended the University of Kansas where he received his bachelor's in history. Before Southface, Sean built a timber frame cabin in western North Carolina using many of the same building practices found in the EarthCraft House program.

Kerry Blind, - Ecos Environmental Design

Prior to founding Ecos Environmental Design, Inc. in 1994, Kerry Blind served as a principal with an Atlanta landscape architecture firm and as president of Kerry Blind Associates, Inc., a firm founded in Orlando in 1981. Before starting his own practice, he worked as a landscape architect and planner with Walt Disney Productions.

A graduate of Purdue University, Kerry’s professional experience has consistently been geared toward environmentally sensitive and sustainable planning and design. He also specialized in damaged site refurbishment and correcting site drainage problems through innovative grading and vegetation schemes.

In 1999, Kerry was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Carlie Bullock-Jones- Ecoworks

Carlie Bullock-Jones is a Sustainable Design Consultant with Ecoworks Studio in Atlanta, Georgia, guiding multiple clients, consultants and design teams through green building initiatives and sustainable strategies specific to their projects. She has collaborated on many
award-winning LEED projects which included leading the effort for the first LEED CI Platinum rated facility in the country, the Interface Showroom and offices. Carlie has written, prepared and presented multiple and various green building topics, including the facilitation of sustainable design (LEED) eco-charettes, and remains current with the industry through her participation and speaking engagements at many green building conferences such as the AIA National
Convention, EnvironDesign, ICFF as well as the USGBC International Greenbuild Conference and Expo. Carlie was also a member of the US Green Building Council’s former LEED for Commercial Interiors Core Committee and is an active member of the LEED Curriculum
Committee as well as the National ASID Sustainable Design Council. In 2004, she received the ASID Georgia Chapter Presidential Citation for Distinguished Service to the Society and Profession. As a frequent speaker on Sustainable Design issues Carlie also serves as a
USGBC LEED Faculty member and Adjunct Professor in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction at Auburn University.

Edward Callaway - Callaway Gardens


Green Infrastructure:  How to approach a developable site and design and engineer it to perform better and greener

 

In November 2003, Edward Callaway took the helm of the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation™ (ICCF), the non-profit owner of Callaway Gardens®, as he was named chairman and chief executive officer of the ICCF Board of Trustees. He has served as a member of the ICCF Board for more than 12 years. The mission of the ICCF is to provide a place of inspiration, relaxation and a better understanding of the living world.

A native of Pine Mountain, Ga., he is the grandson of the founders, Cason and Virginia Callaway, and middle son of Howard H. "Bo" Callaway, who has served as board chairman for many years and continues to serve the ICCF.

Previously, Edward Callaway served as chairman of the board and president of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Inc. in Colorado for 18 years. Prior to that, he worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Company in Chicago and as an accountant for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company in New York.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Dartmouth College; a master’s degree in accounting from New York University Graduate School of Business and a master's of business administration from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.

Committed to community involvement, Callaway served on the board of directors for Colorado State Parks, Colorado Open Lands, and National Ski Areas Association; town council for Mount Crested Butte, CO; school board for Gunnison County, CO; and was a member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Young President's Organization and the Crested Butte Rotary Club. He also serves board of directors for Interface, Inc. of Atlanta.

Brad Calvert - Atlanta Regional Commission

Brad Calvert is a Principal Planner in the Land Use Division of the Atlanta Regional Commission. He serves as project manager for ARC’s greenspace planning efforts and Regional Development Plan. He also provides assistance to local governments in meeting state planning requirements and works with jurisdictions throughout the Atlanta Region on quality growth issues.

Brad joined ARC in 2004, and previously worked as a planner for a local government and planning consulting firm.  Additionally, Brad was a Policy Analyst for two non-profit organizations focused on environmental issues. Brad received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Geography from the University of Georgia and also earned a Master of City Planning (MCP) degree from Georgia Tech.

Anna Carbone - Renewal Construction

Greening What You've Got:  Case Studies, Techniques, and Technologies for Sustainable Renovations

 

Anna was born in Charleston, S.C., in a family that moved – and renovated – often. Her father and brother are Structural Engineers and her mother is a professional artist. “Every new house we moved into became a family project,” she says.

While attending the College of Charleston, where she earned a BS in Business Administration with an emphasis on Hospitality & Tourism, Anna worked as a carpenter’s apprentice in a custom cabinetry shop. After moving to Atlanta in 2002, she got her real estate license to work in sales and development.   The next several years were spent renovating old Atlanta buildings into lofts, town homes, and condos.  During this time she studied interior design at Georgia State University. She also purchased and renovated a home of her own in the Edgewood neighborhood.  Anna joined Renewal Construction in 2006 to combine her skills and interests in design, construction and working with people.

Subrato Chandra - University Central Florida

Breathing Easier:  Steps for Ensuring Better Indoor Air Quality

 

Subrato Chandra, Ph.D. is a Program Director in the Buildings Research Division of the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) of the University of Central Florida (UCF).  His work has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens, Professional Builder, the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals and the State of Florida Energy Code.

He currently directs the Building America Industrialized Housing Partnership project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy which has provided technical assistance to factory and site builders that has resulted in over one hundred thousand energy efficient and durable homes. In addition he teaches at UCF and served as a member of the board of the American Lung Association of Central Florida.

 

Jeff Christian - Oak Ridge National Laboratories

How close to Zero can you afford?

 

Jeff Christian founded the the Buildings Technology Center, which is a National Department of Energy user facility (BTC) located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  The Center’s activities span research on zero energy residential and commercial buildings, advanced appliances, moisture control in buildings, roofs, walls, and foundations, cooling, heating, and solar power integrated systems, and whole building design and performance. Jeff Christian has written more than 135 technical publications, primarily in the area of building energy efficiency. Since 2002 Jeff has focused his research on residential building systems integration.  He established a residential research park with TVA near ORNL in 1999, which, now has 9 test houses, 5 of which are all electric near Zero Energy Houses.   In 2002-2005 lead a team that designed and built the 1st five near zero energy houses with Habitat for Humanity, in the Tennessee Valley Authority’s service territory.  These 1100 ft2 to 2600 ft2 SIP houses have solar grid-tie and have daily total energy costs from $1.12 to $0.42.  Christian has won the ORNL Science Communicator of the year award in 2002 and 2007.  In November of 2007 received the ORNL Director's Award for Community Service, for his effective communication of …, Near-Zero Energy housing—to the public.

Chris Clark - Executive Director, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority

Chris Clark is the Executive Director of the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority (GEFA). GEFA serves as the state bank by providing loans and grants for Clean Drinking Water, Clean Water, weatherization, economic development, and solid waste projects for local governments. GEFA also finances the Governor’s Land Conservation Program and houses the State Energy Office, Georgia’s alternative fuels program and  the state fuel storage tank program.

Mr. Clark serves on the State of Georgia Drought Command and is a member of the Georgia Water Council. He is the Governor’s proxy on the Southern Growth Policy Board  and is an advisory board member for the University of Georgia’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.  Mr. Clark was a graduate of Georgia’s first Executive Leadership program and serves as First Vice President of the Georgia Economic Developers Associations (GEDA) Board of Directors.

Chris Clark was previously the Deputy Commissioner for Global Commerce at the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), the marketing arm of the state of Georgia. During his tenure the State recorded record years with over 45,000 new jobs created and over $8 billion in new investment. Mr. Clark also oversaw the expansion of Georgia’s global footprint by opening new offices in Chile, China and France.

Prior positions include President & CEO of the Fayette County Development Authority in metro Atlanta, and President & CEO of the Hawkinsville-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce and Development Association. He was named by Georgia Trend Magazine to its annual “40 Under 40” list of state leaders in 2006.

A native of Fitzgerald, Ga., Mr. Clark graduated from Georgia Southern University and holds an M.A. in Public Administration from Georgia College and State University.  In 2000 Georgia College and State University named Chris the “Recent Alumni of the Year.”

Mr. Clark, his wife Tiffany and son Christian reside near Peachtree City in Fayette County, Georgia and attend Dogwood Baptist Church.

Seth Coan - Southface

Seth Coan holds a B.S. from Cornell University in civil and environmental engineering and an M.S.E. from the University of California at Berkeley in environmental engineering. He is currently working on a second Master of Science degree in real estate development at the Robinson School of Business at GSU. His work experience includes working as an environmental engineering consultant on a variety of municipal and industrial development projects. Responsibilities at Southface include LEED Administration, as well as technical support with energy modeling and storm water management.

Seth has project related experience in the field of water resources management. He has been project engineer in water and wastewater treatment, reclaimed water and storm water treatment projects. In addition, Seth has experience with brownfield remediation, health risk analysis, database management and GIS systems. Outside of work, Seth has volunteered his time with Engineers Without Borders, he has lived abroad and worked on water related projects in the developing world, he is an enthusiastic photographer and musician, and he speaks Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

Roger Cone - Southern Energy Solutions

Taking the Plunge:  Commitments to Residential Water Efficiency

Roger Cone is the founder and president of Southern Energy Solutions of Marietta, Georgia. In operation since 2004, Roger and his brother, Charles Cone, are dealers of renewable energy and resource conservation products. Southern Energy Solutions has worked extensively with Atlanta area water officials, builders and homeowners in promoting water conservation through greywater reuse.  Another major focus of Southern Energy Solutions is the promotion of renewable energy products  such as solar thermal systems for water heating and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and residential wind turbines for generating electricity.

Prior to his current position, Roger was co-founder and president for thirteen years of EcoTech Consultants of Atlanta.  This firm markets energy recovery systems for schools, office buildings, hospitals and laboratories, and pressure controls for  laboratories and hospital rooms.  EcoTech has completed numerous projects for Emory University, Georgia Tech and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Roger is a member of Southface Energy Institute, the Georgia Solar Energy Association and the U.S. Green Building Council. He is currently pursuing LEED AP accreditation.

David Crawford - Rain Water Management

Every Drop Counts:  Exploring Rainwater and Greywater Systems for Commercial Building Applications

 

David is President of Rainwater Management System (RMS), which was formed in 1998 in Salem, Virginia to address rainwater conservation and management and sustainable water applications. He works closely with German rainwater harvesting experts and upholds the German standards in all RMS’s designs. 

David is also active in outreach programs.  He works with the non-profit, the Cabell Brand Center, to disseminate rainwater harvesting educational information and recently assisted with the Virginia Rainwater Harvesting Manual, which was funded by the Virginia Environmental Endowment. He also serves on the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board’s Technical Advisory Committee to address MS4 amendments.

Darrel Daise is Director of CHSA / Community Housing Services Agency for the past 3 years.  Prior to becoming Director of CHSA he was the loan officer of the City of Savannah’s Department of Housing.  He was born and raised in Savannah, GA and has an undergraduate degree in Human Resources Administration.  Darrel has over twenty seven years in banking and lending experience.  Darrel  retired as a Captain from the Georgia Army National Guard with twenty-two years of service. Darrel serves on the Board for Community Help, Inc. Darrel is married with four children.

Heidi Davison - Mayor of Athens, GA

Heidi was elected Mayor of Athens-Clarke County in 2002, and re-elected in 2006. She is a member of the Board of Managers of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia and the Mayor’s Innovation Project Steering Committee.

Mayor Davison is no stranger to the rich tradition of community activism in Athens.  From education to the environment, Mayor Davison has been involved in a wide range of issues that affect the citizens of Athens.  As a long-time resident of Athens-Clarke County, educator, and community volunteer, she has experienced first-hand the need for local government to actively seek the participation of all its citizen

Betsy del Monte, AIA, LEED AP, is a principal in the architecture group at Beck, and has been focusing on issues of sustainability in commercially successful projects for many years. She has twenty six years of experience in architectural design, project management, and sustainability consulting.

Betsy received her Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Architecture degree from Rice University. Her experience includes work at architecture firms in Atlanta and Houston, as well as nine years with Philip Johnson and John Burgee in New York.

Betsy was 2007 President of AIA Dallas, and is the past chair of the North Texas Green Building Council. She has spoken at national conferences on the subjects of green construction and sustainable building design.

James F. Durrett - Executive Director, The Livable Communities Coalition

Building Coalitions for Smart Growth & Sustainability

 

Jim Durrett is Executive Director of the Livable Communities Coalition, an organization formed in August 2005 to promote quality growth development in the Atlanta region.  The Coalition of approximately 40 organizations is a diverse network of leaders, community and economic development experts and resources, all aligned to help the community address the opportunities and challenges of growth and development.  The goal is the best quality of living in the Atlanta region for all, now and in the future.

Previously, Durrett served for five years with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) as Executive Director of ULI's Atlanta District Council.  ULI is a research and education think tank dedicated to land use and real estate development issues.  Durrett came to ULI from the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, where he held the position of Vice President of Environmental Affairs.  Previous work experience included two-and-a-half years as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The Georgia Conservancy, and ten years as a professional geologist with Golder Associates.

Durrett was a member of the Georgia Environmental Advisory Council from 1998 until 2005, a position appointed by the Governor to advise the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the Governor on environmental policy matters.  He was a member of the inaugural class of the Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership and a participant in the Regional Leadership Institute.  He has also served on numerous collaborative committees and task forces working on growth management issues in the state of Georgia.

Non-profit board experience includes six years on the board of trustees of the Georgia Conservancy, three years on the board of PEDS, a pedestrian advocacy organization, which he chaired in 2005, and seven years on the board of trustees of the Hambidge Center, an artist residency program on 600 acres in Rabun County, Georgia.  He currently serves as chairman of the Board.  Durrett also served for two years in his community as president of the Briarcliff Woods Civic Association. Durrett is a frequent speaker at local and national conferences and workshops on land use and environmental matters.

Durrett attended the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Virginia and a master's degree in Geology from the University of Georgia.  He completed post-graduate work in hydrogeology at the University of Texas.  He is an Atlanta native and lives in DeKalb County with his wife, Pat, and their two children, James (16) and Ryan (14).

Mike Faha - Greenworks

Innovative and Integrated Stormwater Management Strategies

 

Mike Faha, ASLA  is a founding principal of GreenWorks, an award-winning Pacific Northwest landscape architecture and environmental planning firm located in Portland, Oregon. Mike’s primary professional interest is in creating livable, sustainable communities that balance economic, social and ecological needs. Towards that end, Mike leads planning and design project teams which integrate urban ecology, green infrastructure, and urban design on a variety of public and private sector projects. Mike has been the lead in a variety of landscape architectural planning and design project types, including: civic and institutional; commercial and industrial; housing; mixed-use; recreational; public infrastructure; transportation; and urban design. The thread that connects those projects is his focus on sustainable green practices, from community and site planning to detailed site design. Mike is registered landscape architect in Oregon, a LEED accredited professional and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University.

GreenWorks’ practice, established in 1987, has mirrored the successful reputation that Portland has garnered over the past years for its promotion and implementation of green development practices, sustainable stormwater strategies, and low impact development. The firm has been exporting the “Portland Sustainability Story” at a national and international level in pursuit of broadening public acceptance of green urban design for the 21st century.

Kevin Fletcher - Executive Director, Audobon International

Dr. Kevin A. Fletcher currently serves as Executive Director for Audubon International, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) environmental organization focusing on sustainable development and sustainable resource management.  In this capacity, he is responsible for all day-to-day management of the organization’s environmental programs and initiative.  He has also recently served as an Instructor in Environmental Science for Skidmore College in Saratoga, New York and is currently an Adjunct Professor for the Siena College Environmental Studies Program in Albany, New York. 

Prior to his current position he served as an Instructor in Rensselaer’s Lally School of Management & Technology and the Environmental Management & Policy program; as Associate Editor, Managing Editor, and Board member for Corporate Environmental Strategy: The Journal of Environmental Leadership, published by Elsevier Science; as Vice President for a management consulting firm specializing in environmental management, business strategy, and organizational change—working with clients such as Toyota, Consolidated-Edison, Holnam, the National Environmental Policy Institute and the World Resources Institute—and; as a member of Bausch & Lomb’s Corporate Environmental Affairs department.

Dr. Fletcher holds a Bachelors of Science in Biology from the State University of New York at Geneseo, a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Management & Policy from Rensselaer, and a Doctorate degree in Management (with a concentration in environmental management, business strategy, organizational theory, and change management) from Rensselaer’s Lally School of Management & Technology.  Dr. Fletcher is also co-author Environmental Management and Business Strategy: Leadership Skills for the 21st Century (John Wiley: 1998) and has published in numerous trade, professional, and peer-review publications as well being quotes in numerous publication outlets. 

Martin Fretty - City of Savannah Department of Housing

Community Design Charrette

Since 2000 Martin Fretty has served as Director of the City of Savannah Department of Housing.  Mr. Fretty held similar positions in Macon, at Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise and in West Memphis.  He has a Master of Architecture, McGill University, Montreal (1984) and a Bachelor of Architecture, University of Kentucky (1982).
