Pay Me Now or Pay Me Later
Master Speaker: Joe Koenen
Case studies of serious common failures and mistakes in construction and installations in existing homes will be presented. These include disastrous consequences for comfort, energy, health and safety, structural integrity, and IAQ. What are the most practical and economical remediation steps for correcting the building envelope, thermal barrier, HVAC, ducts, crawlspaces, attics and kneewalls, and what kind of savings and results can be expected? Homeowner motivation to pay for repairs, and cost and difficulty factors will be presented, along with details that should have been designed and built originally to avoid these catastrophies. The critical role that should be played by the project manager during construction and follow-through will be discussed.

Designed to Last: The importance of sustainable and disaster resistant design
Too often sustainability and safety are regarded as afterthoughts in the home design and building process, resulting in increased cost and less than desirable results. Useful for architects and builders, this session focuses on how proper forethought during the design phase can reduce the effects of natural disasters and produce a more comfortable and sustainable home. Topics addressed include building practices recommended by the Federal Alliance of Safe Homes, utilizing green design to reduce environmental impact while enhancing the homeowner’s lifestyle, and design concepts that can be incorporated to reduce material use, increase energy efficiency and facilitate EarthCraft House certification of new homes.
