Making it "Humm": High Performance, Low Energy-Use Commercial Buildings and Systems.
Master Speaker Kim Shinn.
Transform your Boomer approach to building and systems design. Learn about proven, practical, innovative and integrated architectural, lighting and mechanical systems for today’s high performance and advanced building designs. Draw from classic, fundamentally good design practices and from modern tools and techniques, like BIM (Building Information Modeling) and energy modeling. Two short presentations will be followed by an audience-engaging panel session that architects, engineers, builders and building owners will not want to miss!

The Existing Building Makeover.
This session will describe how equipment upgrades, commissioning and routine maintenance schedules can improve efficiency, add quality and increase value to Existing Commercial Buildings. Learn how optimal systems performance can reduce utility and maintenance costs, while improving the comfort and well being of the building occupants. Areas of focus will be increased energy and water efficiency and improved indoor air quality.

From the Ground Up: A Contractor's Guide
A contractor’s perspective of what it takes to build a more sustainable building project, from pre-construction through building hand-over. The panel will discuss construction waste management and landfill waste diversion, buying and sourcing locally available materials, quality control, maintaining healthy indoor air quality through the construction process, and site protection issues such as drainage, water quality and habitat protection. Architects, developers and constructors will all benefit from the panelist’s experience with the green building process.

EarthCraft Light Commercial: Filling the Gaps
Until now, smaller commercial buildings haven't had a green certification program to address the specific concerns of "light" commercial design and construction. With half of buildings coming in at 5,000 square feet or less, this groundbreaking Pilot program fills the need to combine inspection-based quality control with prescriptive green strategies. EarthCraft Light Commercial represents the first tailor made certification to focus on this specialized building type. The panelists will discuss elements of this building scale that make it an ideal candidate for this type of program, as well as strategies for its application.

The Challenges of Reaching Net Zero: Low-Carb or No-Carb Energy?
What are the challenges of attaining Net Zero Commercial Buildings by 2030, as specified in the Architecture 2030 Challenge. Various definitions of "net zero" will be discussed, as well as the current technologies most readily applicable. All will be presented in the context of design tools, such as the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide series, to achieve these reductions. The potential for market-ready renewable applications, such as photovoltaic and solar water heating strategies, will also be explored as an approach to filling the gap beyond energy efficiency.
