Steven Peck - Green Roofs for Healthy Cities

Over more than a decade, Mr. Peck has conducted public policy research on a variety of environment and economy issues with a focus on environmental technology transfer and public policy. In 1996, he established the Cardinal Group Inc., a consulting firm that provides services focused on processes, policies and programs that result in sustainable businesses and sustainable community development.

In addition to his policy research, Mr. Peck is the founder and President of “Green Roofs for Healthy Cities” established in 1999 after completion of the report “Greenbacks from Green Roofs: Forging a New Industry in Canada. The association has over 1,700 members and has completed a number of initiatives designed to generate a market for widespread green roof infrastructure implementation.

Mr. Peck has written extensively on the topic of green roof design, policy and research and has spoken on the subject at conferences throughout North America and Internationally. He is currently leading the organization of a World Green Roof Network that will encourage the formation of green roof industry associations throughout the world.

Kimball L. Peed - Senior Project Consultant, Draper & Associates

Kimball Peed is past president and 2007 vice-president of the Southeast Region Building Commissioning Association (SERBCA), which engages owners, designers, and constructors as members, along with providers of professional commissioning services. SERBCA’s goal is to encourage a proper understanding and broad acceptance of professional building commissioning as standard practice in the southeast region of the US. He is a member of the Building Commissioning Association, which internationally promotes building commissioning practices that maintain high professional standards and fulfill building owners’ expectations.

Kimball is also a member of the Construction Owner’s Association of America (COAA) and is on the board of directors of the COAA-Georgia Chapter. He is active in the QBSGeorgia Steering Committee that promotes reliance on qualifications evaluations in lieu of bidding for the selection of professional construction services in the public sector. With his firm, he is an active associate with the Georgia Association of Physical Plant Administrators and an active associate of the National Association of State Facilities Administrators.

Kimball is a senior consultant with the Capital Programs Division of Draper & Associates, a diversified consulting firm based in Atlanta. His responsibilities include contract management on behalf of the Real Estate Management Division at the firm’s Atlanta Housing Authority engagement. He provides Qualifications-Based Selection procurement services to Georgia State University for use in the acquisition of professional construction services.

Before joining Draper & Associates, Mr. Peed was with the Construction Division of the Georgia State Financing & Investment Commission (GSFIC) as director of external affairs and director of contracts. At GSFIC, he was responsible for managing solicitations for public construction projects and developing extensive practices in new methods of Qualifications-Based Selection of professional construction services for Georgia state government. He was part of the management team for the collaborative public/private sector effort that created many chapters in a Statewide Construction Manual and the related development of new design and construction contracts for the State of Georgia. He was co-editor of the state’s Commissioning Guidelines document, which has been the model for similar guidelines in other states.

While working for Georgia’s General Assembly for six years, Mr. Peed was the director of professional staff to a state legislative committee comprising the leadership of the General Assembly. As founding director of the Budgetary Responsibility Oversight Committee’s Research Office, Mr. Peed organized this new professional resource for the state legislature, leading a team of performance evaluation professionals in examinations of state government programs and policies, including groundbreaking work on capital construction. In addition, he pioneered six annual strategic planning conferences for state government that were attended by legislators, governors, state agency heads, and other state constitutional and appointed officials.

Kimball makes his home in Newnan, Georgia.

Cynthia Poselenzny - Packer Industries, Inc.
Cynthia has worked in the manufacturing and service environment for over 20 years. When moving to Atlanta Cynthia was introduced to the construction industry and the problem of waste within that industry. Becoming co-owner of Packer Industries, Inc., which is a manufacturer of equipment specifically designed for recycling a variety of materials, she was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of being able to own her own business and make an impact on her community. Cynthia’s strong community focus has enabled Packer Industries to partner with the University of Georgia on many educational initiatives, research projects, and outreach efforts providing critical leadership to the Georgia Composting Association and become a primary industry contact for information on processing and recycling of construction waste and debris. Packer Industries, Inc. has partnered with EarthCraft House, the Building America Program, the Rebuild America Program, the EPA Wastewise and Greenscapes; programs helping to grow this new and expanding industry. Our membership in the USGBC will allow us to continue our work to manufacture the best equipment for the industry and to assist in the research necessary to grow this very important component of green building.
Duncan Prahl - Research Manager, IBACOS, Inc.

Duncan Prahl is a registered architect and Research Manager with IBACOS Inc. a research and consulting firm in Pittsburgh PA. His primary focus is the oversight and management of IBACOS’ advanced systems and applied building science research projects, including those sponsored by the DOE’s Building America Program. Duncan’s specific research investigates builders’ business and operational processes that enable local implementation of higher performance homes using Building America research results. He also works with community developers to establish a process by which higher performance housing can be implemented by a number of builders throughout master planned communities. His past research includes evaluating community scale power generation strategies such as fuel cells and other residential onsite power generation systems, and the correlation of house size to energy efficiency and consumption.

Eric Randall - Long Engineering, Inc.
 
Mr. Randall has over 14 years of engineering design and management experience in hydrology, hydraulic and water quality measures on projects in both the public and private sector. He has unique experience in the design of innovative storm water quality measures on urban sites and is successful in collaboration with large, multi-disciplined design teams. Mr. Randall serves as Senior Engineer for Long Engineering, Inc.’s Land Development and Infrastructure department in their Atlanta, Georgia office.
Robert Reed - Preston & Reed Sustainability Solutions


Robert E. Reed, Designer and planner with Preston & Reed Sustainability Solutions, is a third generation Atlanta native and Downtown Atlanta resident.

He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Architecture.

He is past chair of the Frazer Center, a non-profit center for adult and children with disabilities. While chair the center completed a 5 million dollar capital campaign and renovation.

Robert serves on the Advisory Board for SOUTHFACE Energy Institute’s Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable.

Robert recently co-led the community interaction and architectural guidelines portions of the Chattahoochee Hill Country Community Plan, and has recently completed design of the first project in Jonesboro’s recently adopted Historic District. In addition to his architectural work he forms partnerships to build energy efficient, historically inspired, affordable housing for students and families in inner-city neighborhoods.


Tristan Roberts - Senior Editor, BuildingGreen, Inc.
Tristan Roberts is Senior Editor for BuildingGreen, Inc., based in Brattleboro, Vermont, and widely considered one of the most authoritative, unbiased sources of information on green building. At BuildingGreen, Roberts participates in publishing Environmental Building News, the GreenSpec Product Directory, and the BuildingGreen Suite of online resources. Roberts has hands-on as well as research experience in green building, and has studied sustainable design at Boston Architectural College.
Jerome Rossetti - Builder, DR Construction, Inc.
Jerome Rossetti oversees the day to day operations of new construction projects. Jerome graduated from the University of Georgia in 1985 and spent eighteen years working at Ravin Homes, a family business, which constructed between sixty to eighty homes a year in and around Peachtree City, GA. Ravin Homes also was involved in some large residential developments. Jerome has experience in residential as well as the commercial construction industry but more recently Jerome’s primary focus has been on the custom residential market in the Atlanta area.

Jerome and his wife Helen have three children and live in the Buckhead area. In his spare time Jerome coaches little league football and is an avid tennis player. With over twenty years experience in residential construction, Jerome knows what it takes to turn out a successful project.

William (Bill) Strang - TOTO USA, Inc.

Bill has spent 25 years in manufacturing and management positions. Beginning his career in Chicago, he has been transferred throughout the US as his career grew. He has managed businesses with a wide range of products and components; he also has worked on mergers and acquisitions in the venture capital industry.

His experience ranges from automotive engine manufacturing, to stern tube shaft seals for fast attack submarines, to pharmaceutical applications, to petrochemical facilities, to agricultural equipment manufacturers. The breadth of his experience has provided him with a deep understanding of a wide spectrum of businesses and operations. During his career, Bill has worked for two multi-national organizations and two M&A businesses, received training in 6 sigma and lean, and developed proprietary manufacturing processes that became integral to the success of businesses in highly competitive industries. He spent 15 years at John Crane Company, manufacturer of end-face shaft seals, four years at Hydraulic Technologies, three years at Hyco, and the past three years at TOTO USA, Inc.

Bill has studied and worked in Europe and the Middle East and spent several years working as an ex-pat in Canada. He has also taught college level classes, providing training in technologies and practices such as lean manufacturing, kaizen, and leadership development.

At TOTO, Bill began his work as the Director of Operations, focused on the Lakewood manufacturing operation. There, he provided leadership and instituted innovations that improved output and productivity through the implementation of 5S training and mentoring. In 2004, he was promoted to Vice President of Operations with responsibility for all four of TOTO plants: Morrow, GA; Lakewood, GA; Fairburn, GA; and Ontario, CA.
Bill’s wide-ranging experience enables him to bring a unique knowledge of business and operations -- along with his singular management style -- to the TOTO USA team.

During Bill’s tenure, TOTO’s Morrow Manufacturing Facility has benefited from 5S techniques implemented by a team lead by TS Lee, his Morrow plant manager. With the implementation of 5S techniques, TOTO has improvements in the following area:

  • Maintenance: 10% reduction in Spare parts
  • Set up time: Assembly area set up time reduced by 4 hours per day
  • Tool layout in the workstation area: 8% improvement in efficiency
  • Kiln Storage: Reduced by space by 30%
  • Cut Tooling : Reduced by 50%
  • Clay Preparation: Labor efficiency improved by 8%

Under Bill’s leadership, TOTO’s manufacturing facility has received awards for specific area improvements and the clever implementation of the 5S theory by TOTO, Ltd.’s, internal auditors. TOTO USA has also achieved ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004.

TOTO USA has also developed secondary uses or recycling channels for every waste stream from the manufacturing process.

Stephen Swicegood, FAIA - Managing Principal, Gensler Atlanta

Stephen Swicegood has been characterized as a polymath, ‘a person of encyclopedic interests’. He is a designer; a strategic planner; an architect who practices interior design; and a history buff that likes to explore the cutting edge of change. Stephen has planned and designed over 20 million square feet of office environments that support innovation and collaboration, work that has redefined workplace design through its publication in professional journals such as Architectural Record, Interiors, Interior Design, Contract and the 1996 book The New Office. His work has enhanced the profession’s understanding of what makes an effective environment for knowledge work, the largest and fastest growing segment of our economy.

Reed Thomas - Senior Estimator, RJ Griffin & Company

Reed Thomas has been in the construction industry since 1969. He began his career in New York City and is currently Senior Estimator with R. J. Griffin & Company in Atlanta, GA. Reed has worked in literally every major department within the commercial construction industry and has been involved with well over $400 million worth of commercial and residential projects.

Reed has been involved in the preconstruction and construction of two LEED projects, the Southface ECO Office building and the Richard B. Russell Clubhouse. Reed is a LEED Accredited Professional since 2001 and has been involved in preconstruction efforts on numerous other proposed LEED projects.

Laura Uhde - Southface


Laura Uhde graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Sustainable Development and a minor in Appropriate Technology. She joined Southface in October 2003 as is an Earth Craft House Fellow, and she works on Solar Energy Homes and other projects and EarthCraft House trainings. She would like to work in various areas of sustainable development before deciding what degree to pursue in graduate school.

Paula Vaughan - Perkins & Will

As a Registered Architect with considerable involvement in Sustainable Design and Interior Design, Paula Vaughan has the type of broad-based experience that generates a unique, holistic approach to her work. With over twenty years of experience, Ms. Vaughan demonstrates an involved, hands-on attitude that makes her equally adept at all phases of the design and construction process.

She has been Project Architect for a wide variety of projects, with a focus on K-12 and sustainable, high-performance buildings. She is a LEED Accredited
Professional, as well as the Perkins+Will firmwide LEED contact, and places an emphasis on incorporating sustainable design ideas and elements into all of her projects. Ms. Vaughan is a member of The American Institute of Architects, a Registered Architect in Georgia, New York, Massachusetts, Texas
and Louisiana, has been certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and is a USGBC Member.

Fred Wacker - Home Depot Foundation
 

Fred Wacker is the Senior Program Manager for Affordable Housing for the Foundation and has been involved in affordable housing and community development for over 30 years. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2003, Wacker held positions including Southeast Regional Director of the Fannie Mae Foundation, Community Investment Officer and Deputy Director of Community Investment Services for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, and National Director of Neighborhood Program Development for the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, now referred to as NeighborWorks America®.

Select accomplishments include: development of the monitoring and tracking systems for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta's Affordable Housing Program which served as a model for the Bank System; co-developed a business plan for integrating a major foundation's grant making and lending efforts into a nonprofit capital initiative to attract Wall Street investors to main street community revitalization; designed, tested and replicated amongst NeighborWorks® organizations a self-help housing construction program in five urban centers modeled after the rural self-help construction process; and, provided organizational development assistance in the creation of the Alabama Multi-Family Loan Consortium, Mississippi Housing Initiative and Georgia Affordable Housing Corporation.                        

Fred has a Masters in Education from Ohio University and is a certified Urban Lender. A native of Ohio, Wacker currently lives in Madison, Georgia with his wife and two sons.

Marisa Wilson - Commercial Green Building Services Project Manager, Southface

Marisa Wilson originally joined Southface in September of 2004 as a Green Building fellow. Now she serves as a Green Building Services Project Manager.  Working in Commercial Green Building Services at Southface, she is able to combine her interests in the aesthetics of design, the technical elements of high-performance building, and the challenge of making it all sustainable. Originally from Ithaca, NY, Marisa graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in Environmental Studies. She is a member of the USGBC Emerging Green Builders National Committee, and a LEED!" Accredited Professional. In her free time, she enjoys snowboarding and travel.
