John Adams serves as the
Managing Director of the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute
TM (www.greenguard.org). GREENGUARD Environmental Institute
TM is a non-profit organization with a Certification
Advisory Board composed of independent scientists, public
health, leaders in procurement, government and architectural
design experts. The GREENGUARD Certified Products TM
program encourages manufacturers to test their products
for low emissions, certify products via GREENGUARD Standards
TM and to offer indoor furnishings and finishes buyers
and specifiers a resource, guide and technical assistance
to low emitting products and materials. Mr. Adams is
also serves as a Senior Research Engineer at the Georgia
Tech Energy and Environmental Management Center (EEMC).
He has been employed at Georgia Tech for 22 years. He
is currently on loan to the U.S. Department of Energy
– Atlanta Regional Office. His responsibility
is tech support to the Federal Energy Management Program
(FEMP). The U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy
Management Program (FEMP) works to reduce energy use
at federal facilities. FEMP helps agencies save energy
and taxpayer dollars by advancing energy efficiency
and water conservation, promoting the use of distributed
and renewable energy, and improving utility management
decisions at federal sites. For two years previous,
Mr. Adams provided assistance to the Army Environmental
Policy Institute in the formulation of the 25-year Army
Transformation, as well as near term energy and
environmental impediments to the Army mission. At stake
are major reductions in the current $2 billion/yr energy/environmental
budget. During his work at Georgia Tech managing EEMC,
he was responsible for $1-2 million in engineering services
per year. Under his guidance, EEMC launched the Ga.
Tech/ANSI Management System for Energy 2000 Standard.
John has conducted over 300 facility assessments for
energy conservation, environmental compliance, health
and safety, and waste reduction in industry, schools,
military facilities and hospitals. He is a member of
American National Standards Institute, ASTM International
and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and
Air-conditioning Engineers.
Mr. Adams holds a Bachelor's and Master's
degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and a MBA. He is
a Registered Professional Engineer in 24 states and
an Accredited LEED Professional. His personal interests
include marathons/triathlons, aviation, cooking, art
and horticulture. He and his wife Gina have three children
and three grand children. |

Mike Barcik is a senior research engineer and the Director
of Technical Services at Southface Energy Institute. His
areas of expertise include energy performance modeling,
design reviews, building diagnostics, and technical training.
A graduate from Georgia Tech with BS/MS degrees in mechanical
engineering, he has conducted research in high-efficiency
mechanical systems and has conducted hundreds of workshops
and charrettes on high-performance residential and commercial
buildings, including over 40 week-long HERS trainings.
He is an active member of the State of Georgia Energy
Code Task Force, a LEED accredited professional, and a
USGBC LEED Faculty member. |

Frank Burdette, Project Manager with Southface Green
Building Services, works with commercial and institutional
owners, developers, architects, engineers, and builders
to facilitate the sustainable construction practices
established by the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED
rating system. He is currently managing construction
of the Southface Eco Office, a 10,000sf office and green
building demonstration project tracking LEED-NC Platinum
certification.
Frank's 16 years of construction experience include
the three LEED certified buildings comprising the Woodward
Middle School in College Park, GA. Frank holds a Masters
in Historic Preservation from the University of Georgia,
and a B.S. in Biology from Millsaps College in Jackson,
MS. |

Suzanne Burnes joined the Pollution Prevention Assistance
Division in December 1999 as a Pollution Prevention
Specialist. She previously worked for seven years in
hazardous waste management consulting for the U.S. EPA
and the U.S. Army. Burnes is responsible for publication
of the quarterly newsletter, case studies, and other
publications. She is also responsible for P2AD's participation
in the regional Department of Defense P2 Partnership,
manages the Division's hospitality P2 program, and maintains
the Division's web site.
Burnes has lived in Atlanta for 14 years, and resides
in East Atlanta. She serves on the Board of Directors
for the neighborhood's SouthStar Community Development
Corporation, and is active in many community activities
as well as environmental organizations such as the Georgia
Conservancy. She received a Bachelors Degree in Environmental
Studies from Warren Wilson College.

Kirsten Childs graduated from Edinburgh College
of Art and Architecture, Scotland, before coming to
the US to work with Skidmore Owings Merrill, New York.
Prior to becoming a director of Croxton Collaborative
Architects (CCA) in 1985, she worked as Director of
Interior Design for Richard Meier Associates.
Ms. Childs brings singular knowledge to the understanding
of projects pursuing design excellence in sustainable
design. Recognized nationally for her prescient role
in introducing environmental/sustainable considerations
to the design and architectural community, she consistently
advocates this approach through CCA and her own consulting
firm, Kirsten Childs Sustainable Consulting Services.
Her insight into the complex requirements of sustainable
design has placed her in a unique position to serve
her clients, many of whom are pursuing high LEED®
certifications under the USGBC’s Green Building
Rating System. Her work contributed to earning CCA the
USGBC’s prestigious ‘Leadership Award for
Education (2005), as well as three National AIA ‘Committee
on Environment Top Ten Awards’ for Sustainable
Design Excellence.
Ms. Childs writes, teaches and lectures widely. She chaired
the USGBC’s LEED Environmental Quality Technical
Advisory Group for developing LEED markets and served
on the LEED Steering Committee for over four years, as
well as the ASID’s Sustainable Design Council. She
continues to participate with the LEED Corporate Interiors
Core Committee. |

Technology, Aesthetics and Efficiency

Nancy E. Clanton is founder and President of Clanton
& Associates, a lighting design firm specializing in sustainable
design. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree (Architectural
Engineering, Illumination Emphasis) from the University
of Colorado, Boulder and is a registered Professional
Engineer in the state of Colorado. Nancy has 28 years
of experience in lighting design, including 24 with her
current firm. She speaks throughout the nation on topics
relating to sustainable and energy efficient design and
light pollution and has been an instructor at the University
of Colorado-Boulder. Nancy is past chairperson of the
Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA)
Outdoor Environmental Lighting Committee, a past director
or the International Association of Lighting Designers
and is currently on the board of the International Dark
Sky Association. In addition, she serves on the Advisory
Committee of Environmental Building News, is a member
of the Professional Advisory Board for the Engineering
Department at the University of Colorado-Boulder and is
a member of the United States Green Building Council.
Nancy is a topic editor for the IESNA Lighting Handbook
and her committee was responsible for the production of
the IESNA Recommended Practices on Outdoor Lighting and
is a Fellow of IESNA. She was group leader for the “Greening
of the White House” initiative and received the
1999 “Contribution to the Built Environment Award”
from the Colorado North Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects (AIA). In 2001 Nancy served as a final editor
for the Advanced Lighting Guidelines written by the California
Energy Commission. Her firm’s lighting design projects
reflect her sustainable philosophy and nine of their projects
have been named to the AIA Committee on the Environment
Earth Day Top Ten List. Nine projects for which Clanton
& Associates designed the lighting are LEED rated and
fourteen current projects are registered, certification
pending. Nancy is a LEED 2.0 accredited professional.
