John Adams - GSA

John Adams serves as the Managing Director of the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute TM (www.greenguard.org). GREENGUARD Environmental Institute TM is a non-profit organization with a Certification Advisory Board composed of independent scientists, public health, leaders in procurement, government and architectural design experts. The GREENGUARD Certified Products TM program encourages manufacturers to test their products for low emissions, certify products via GREENGUARD Standards TM and to offer indoor furnishings and finishes buyers and specifiers a resource, guide and technical assistance to low emitting products and materials. Mr. Adams is also serves as a Senior Research Engineer at the Georgia Tech Energy and Environmental Management Center (EEMC). He has been employed at Georgia Tech for 22 years. He is currently on loan to the U.S. Department of Energy – Atlanta Regional Office. His responsibility is tech support to the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). The U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) works to reduce energy use at federal facilities. FEMP helps agencies save energy and taxpayer dollars by advancing energy efficiency and water conservation, promoting the use of distributed and renewable energy, and improving utility management decisions at federal sites. For two years previous, Mr. Adams provided assistance to the Army Environmental Policy Institute in the formulation of the 25-year Army Transformation, as well as near term energy and environmental impediments to the Army mission. At stake are major reductions in the current $2 billion/yr energy/environmental budget. During his work at Georgia Tech managing EEMC, he was responsible for $1-2 million in engineering services per year. Under his guidance, EEMC launched the Ga. Tech/ANSI Management System for Energy 2000 Standard. John has conducted over 300 facility assessments for energy conservation, environmental compliance, health and safety, and waste reduction in industry, schools, military facilities and hospitals. He is a member of American National Standards Institute, ASTM International and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-conditioning Engineers.

Mr. Adams holds a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and a MBA. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in 24 states and an Accredited LEED Professional. His personal interests include marathons/triathlons, aviation, cooking, art and horticulture. He and his wife Gina have three children and three grand children.

Mike Barcik- Southface



Mike Barcik is a senior research engineer and the Director of Technical Services at Southface Energy Institute. His areas of expertise include energy performance modeling, design reviews, building diagnostics, and technical training. A graduate from Georgia Tech with BS/MS degrees in mechanical engineering, he has conducted research in high-efficiency mechanical systems and has conducted hundreds of workshops and charrettes on high-performance residential and commercial buildings, including over 40 week-long HERS trainings. He is an active member of the State of Georgia Energy Code Task Force, a LEED accredited professional, and a USGBC LEED Faculty member.

Denise Brinson -Economic & Community Development Manager, City of Suwanee

Denise Brinson has spent the last eight years serving as the Economic and Community Development Manager for the City of Suwanee. Suwanee is a fast-growing metro Atlanta city and was designated a Main Street community in 2000. Denise directs all economic development efforts for the City including downtown revitalization and I-85 corridor efforts and oversees all promotional, event and public relations efforts for the City. In addition, Denise is currently serving as immediate past-president of the Georgia Downtown Association. Denise has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Florida Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of South Florida.

Prior economic development activities include several years as an economic development specialist for Florida Power Corporation, based in St. Petersburg, FL. In this capacity, Denise led and facilitated on-going planning sessions with city/county governmental entities, chambers of commerce, and regional economic development organizations. In addition, Denise designed and wrote a community-based strategic planning program that she marketed and implemented in 10 Florida communities, including a regional effort for an eight-county area in North Florida.

Although Denise’s activities with the City of Suwanee are very important, her first priority is her family. Larry (husband), Paige (10 year old daughter) and Grey (6 year old son) keep her very busy along with various church and community activities.

Adam Brunning - Tributary Realty, LLC

 

Adam Brunning, Director of Sales, is a skilled broker with nearly 15 years of experience in real estate sales, sales management, and marketing. Formerly a leading sales manager with John Wieland Homes and Hedgewood Properties, he has been engaged in the marketing of dozens of suburban and intown communities. He is a lifetime member of the Atlanta Board of Realtors Million Dollar Club and Platinum Circle of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association Sales and Marketing Council. Mr. Brunning graduated with Honors from the University of Georgia, with a degree in Marketing and Advertising.

Donald C. Buenger, AIA - Managing Principal and Atlanta Director, Urban Design Group/Inc.

Don Buenger is President of Urban Design Group, Inc. and Managing Principal of the Atlanta Studio. An Honors graduate from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1974, Don joined Urban Design Group as a founding member in 1975, and initiated the Atlanta office in 1989. During his 32-year career with UDG, Don has been responsible for a wide range of projects as Principal Architect, Designer, Project Architect and Senior Project Manager. His projects have ranged in size from small retail shops to major downtown mixed-use developments. This experience includes renovation, historic preservation, new and reconfigured shopping centers, high-rise office buildings, as well as hotels, cinemas and service buildings.

His particular skill is to provide solutions to complex planning and development problems. He has been actively involved with many of the firm's award-winning projects, including Denver’s Tabor Center, San Antonio’s Rivercenter, and Atlanta’s Cobb Galleria Centre. Common throughout his career has been his attention to detail and consistent record of project delivery; on time and with a very disciplined approach to achieving a project's budget.

Frank Burdette

Frank Burdette, Project Manager with Southface Green Building Services, works with commercial and institutional owners, developers, architects, engineers, and builders to facilitate the sustainable construction practices established by the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED rating system. He is currently managing construction of the Southface Eco Office, a 10,000sf office and green building demonstration project tracking LEED-NC Platinum certification.

Frank's 16 years of construction experience include the three LEED certified buildings comprising the Woodward Middle School in College Park, GA. Frank holds a Masters in Historic Preservation from the University of Georgia, and a B.S. in Biology from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.

Suzanne Burnes Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P2AD), Georgia DNR

Suzanne Burnes joined the Pollution Prevention Assistance Division in December 1999 as a Pollution Prevention Specialist. She previously worked for seven years in hazardous waste management consulting for the U.S. EPA and the U.S. Army. Burnes is responsible for publication of the quarterly newsletter, case studies, and other publications. She is also responsible for P2AD's participation in the regional Department of Defense P2 Partnership, manages the Division's hospitality P2 program, and maintains the Division's web site.

Burnes has lived in Atlanta for 14 years, and resides in East Atlanta. She serves on the Board of Directors for the neighborhood's SouthStar Community Development Corporation, and is active in many community activities as well as environmental organizations such as the Georgia Conservancy. She received a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Studies from Warren Wilson College.

Kirsten Childs, ASID, LEED AP - Master Speaker Session

Kirsten Childs graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and Architecture, Scotland, before coming to the US to work with Skidmore Owings Merrill, New York. Prior to becoming a director of Croxton Collaborative Architects (CCA) in 1985, she worked as Director of Interior Design for Richard Meier Associates.

Ms. Childs brings singular knowledge to the understanding of projects pursuing design excellence in sustainable design. Recognized nationally for her prescient role in introducing environmental/sustainable considerations to the design and architectural community, she consistently advocates this approach through CCA and her own consulting firm, Kirsten Childs Sustainable Consulting Services. Her insight into the complex requirements of sustainable design has placed her in a unique position to serve her clients, many of whom are pursuing high LEED® certifications under the USGBC’s Green Building Rating System. Her work contributed to earning CCA the USGBC’s prestigious ‘Leadership Award for Education (2005), as well as three National AIA ‘Committee on Environment Top Ten Awards’ for Sustainable Design Excellence.

Ms. Childs writes, teaches and lectures widely. She chaired the USGBC’s LEED Environmental Quality Technical Advisory Group for developing LEED markets and served on the LEED Steering Committee for over four years, as well as the ASID’s Sustainable Design Council. She continues to participate with the LEED Corporate Interiors Core Committee.
Nancy Clanton, PE, LC, IALD - Master Speaker Session

Session title: Advances in Lighting Technology, Aesthetics and Efficiency

Nancy E. Clanton is founder and President of Clanton & Associates, a lighting design firm specializing in sustainable design. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree (Architectural Engineering, Illumination Emphasis) from the University of Colorado, Boulder and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Colorado. Nancy has 28 years of experience in lighting design, including 24 with her current firm. She speaks throughout the nation on topics relating to sustainable and energy efficient design and light pollution and has been an instructor at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Nancy is past chairperson of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Outdoor Environmental Lighting Committee, a past director or the International Association of Lighting Designers and is currently on the board of the International Dark Sky Association. In addition, she serves on the Advisory Committee of Environmental Building News, is a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Engineering Department at the University of Colorado-Boulder and is a member of the United States Green Building Council. Nancy is a topic editor for the IESNA Lighting Handbook and her committee was responsible for the production of the IESNA Recommended Practices on Outdoor Lighting and is a Fellow of IESNA. She was group leader for the “Greening of the White House” initiative and received the 1999 “Contribution to the Built Environment Award” from the Colorado North Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2001 Nancy served as a final editor for the Advanced Lighting Guidelines written by the California Energy Commission. Her firm’s lighting design projects reflect her sustainable philosophy and nine of their projects have been named to the AIA Committee on the Environment Earth Day Top Ten List. Nine projects for which Clanton & Associates designed the lighting are LEED rated and fourteen current projects are registered, certification pending. Nancy is a LEED 2.0 accredited professional.

Daniel H. Cohen - Director of Planning, Pond & Company, Inc.

 
Diane Dale, ASLA, JD - Director of Commnity Design, William McDonough + Partners

Diane M. Dale, ASLA, JD, has 25 years of experience in planning new communities and campuses for private, institutional, and public sectors.  She has directed William McDonough + Partners’ planning work in the United States, South America, Europe and China and works closely with William McDonough to provide direction and continuity on the implementation of Cradle to Cradle strategies and approaches at the level of planning.  Ms. Dale is currently working on planning projects with Google Inc., Pacific Gas & Electric Co., and Cherokee Investment Fund.  She is frequently asked to speak on the planning work of the firm and made presentations at the USGBC Greenbuild conferences in both 2005 and 2006 and well as the International Federation of Landscape Architects Annual Meeting in 2006.  Ms. Dale has degrees in design from State of New York and University of Pennsylvania, a juris doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Genova, Italy.  

Lance Davis - General Services Administration

Lance Davis is part of the Sustainable Design Program in the Office of Applied Science within GSA’s Public Buildings Service (PBS). He serves as a sustainable design expert for GSA and participates on the Interagency Sustainability Working Group, the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Existing Buildings Core Committee and is working on GSA wide sustainable design training. He has a Bachelors of Architecture from Mississippi State University and his architecture work includes the Korean War Veteran’s Memorial, the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, and the Walter Reed Community Center which is designed for a LEED Silver rating.

Scott Doksansky - Director of Portfolio Management for Melaver, Inc.

  Scott Doksansky works in Atlanta as Director of Portfolio Management for Melaver, Inc., a real estate development firm based in Savannah, Ga. Melaver’s real estate portfolio includes office, retail, showroom, mixed-use and industrial properties in five Southeast cities. Scott is charged with oversight of the property management functions as well as the acquisitions and dispositions for the firm. Scott has 16 years of real estate background on behalf of some of the nation's largest firms including New Plan Realty Trust. He also worked for Chambers of Commerce in Nebraska and California. A graduate of Dana College in Nebraska, Scott also graduated from the Institute for Organization Management, a professional development program for association and chamber executives, was a Spring 2006 participant in BOMA International and Harvard University’s “Emerging Leaders in Real Estate” and a presenter at the 2006 BOMA International North American Commercial Real Estate Congress. Scott is a LEED 2.0 accredited professional.
Jeff DuFresne - Executive Director of the Urban Land Institute’s Atlanta District Council
Jeff DuFresne is Executive Director of the Urban Land Institute’s Atlanta District Council. ULI Atlanta has more than 1,400 members, holds monthly programs, and provides leadership in the responsible use of land to enhance the total environment. Members are actively involved with planning and development issues throughout metro Atlanta causing the ULI Atlanta District Council to be seen as the premier real estate association as well as a resource for developers, builders, architects, contractors, planning and government leaders. Jeff’s extensive experience in Atlanta real estate over the past 22 years includes real estate development, acquisitions, and portfolio management. He is perhaps best known for his success in overseeing several local development and re-development projects, such as Centennial Tower, Renaissance Square, as well as One Ninety One Peachtree Tower and Peachtree Center, which were named International Buildings of the Year by the Business Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) in 1997 and 2004, respectively. Prior to joining ULI, Jeff was regional vice president of Colonnade Properties LLC, senior vice president of LNR Property Corporation and senior investment manager for the Dutch Institutional Holding Company (DIHC). Jeff holds the CCIM and CPM real estate designations, earned a bachelor degree in economics and urban studies from Trinity College (Hartford) and concentrated in marketing and finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business (New York).
David Ellis - Executive Vice President, Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association

David Ellis joined the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association as Executive Vice President in May 2005. David was recognized by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as the best new Executive Officer in the nation and was honored as NAHB’s Executive Officer of the Year in 2003. He is a board member for the NAHB Executive Officers Council, the Livable Communities Coalition, HomeAid Atlanta, the Housing Institute and Southface Energy Institute.

Dagmar Epsten - Epsten Group Architects

 

Dagmar Epsten’s firm, The Epsten Group, was recently chosen by the U.S. Green Building Council as the only reviewer in the Southeast for the LEED-CI, LEED-CS and LEED-NC rating systems. Ms. Epsten is currently LEED Consultant for Atlantic Station’s 201 17th Street tower (LEED-CS Gold pre-certified) after having consulted for the Wachovia Tower at Atlantic Station (LEED-CS Silver) and Georgia Tech’s Management Building (LEED-NC Silver). Her firm’s focus on comprehensive, high-performance design solutions derives from her background in architecture, energy engineering, daylighting, indoor air quality, construction specifications, planning, landscape design and interiors. A top expert and consultant in the nation on high-performance, sustainable buildings, Ms. Epsten also enjoys designing both new and adaptive re-use commercial projects as well as townhouses and custom homes.

David Freedman - State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources


Chief Engineer for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Manage an aggressive green building program that has 6 LEED certified projects, the most of any state agency in the nation. Serve on the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and a member of the USGBC LEED Faculty. Original member of the LEED-EB Pilot Program Committee and Subject Matter Expert for the new LEED AP exam. Committee chair for the 2005 Host Committee for Greenbuild in Atlanta. Former Treasurer of the Association of Conservation Engineers and former President of the Georgia Association of State Facilities Administrators.
