Rockmart Children’s Academy: The Gold Standard for a Healthy Environment for Kids

Green Building

This news release features a recent project certified in the EarthCraft Light Commercial category.

Extra care in material selection and building envelope construction creates a stellar indoor environment for young students.

The Lillie Moreland Dyar Complex of Rockmart Georgia went the extra mile to provide the best building and learning environment for their building’s special occupants, children ages zero to six. While the average EarthCraft Light Commercial (ECLC) certified project achieves 140 points, the academy achieved Gold Certification with 190 points—only 10 points away from Platinum certification. Extra attention was paid to the materials procurement and envelope tightness to improve indoor air quality. With a total building square footage of 13,400 square feet the project team rose to the ECLC challenge.

Project highlights ensuring a high standard of indoor air quality and building performance include:

  • No added urea-formaldehyde in composite wood
  • Ultra low VOC paints, finishes, and adhesives
  • Indoor air flush-out prior to occupancy
  • Exceeded air tightness performance test with an ELR of 0.188
  • Pre-construction wall mock-up on-site

These are just a few of the key strategies that the project team implemented that allow students to learn in a healthy, safe environment.
