SART: Atlanta's Transit Oriented Future
December 4, 2009 - At long last, Atlanta has begun to give serious thought to transit. Many governing, advisory and informal bodies are looking at various travel modes, from high-speed trains, to commuter rail and buses, to streetcars – all intended to serve different purposes and various types of movement. Georgia Department of Transportation is undertaking studies for linking Atlanta and Chattanooga with a high-speed passenger rail line and has raised its Office of Intermodal Transportation to Division level. The Transit Implementation Board has adopted a governing structure to implement its regional transit plan. Application has been made for stimulus funds to begin the construction of a portion of the Peachtree Streetcar project. MARTA has recently completed a new overview and drafted guidelines for transit oriented development. Groups such as Citizens for Progressive Transit have been formed to advocate for regional transit.
SART: State of the Region – ARC’s Plan 2040
November 6, 2009 - On November 1st, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Board received a draft of the Regional Assessment for “Plan 2040,” ARC’s current regional planning process. Plan 2040 is the first comprehensive transportation and development plan that ARC has undertaken in at least a decade. While substantial progress has been made in the region through local government greenspace protection, Livable Centers Initiative studies and innovative new development, the Atlanta region continues to have major problems and some real opportunities.
SART: Public Health and the Impacts of Environmental Policies
October 2, 2009 - This October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is hosting the National Environmental Public Health Conference in Atlanta at the end of the month. To set the stage for those interested in the conference and the topic generally, this Roundtable will focus on the public health impacts of environmental policies. Learn about issues related to transportation, land use, water, and climate change and their impacts on public health.
