Improving Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) on the College Campus was a program funded by an EPA grant to provide facilities professionals and others working on college campuses with sound, building-science-based recommendations for improving IAQ.

Southface provided direct educational outreach to program participants in the form of live trainings on college campuses and an online training module for the general public. Educational materials included building envelope design, moisture management, ventilation strategies, pollutant source control, reducing exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and an overview of LEED®-related IAQ strategies.

Southface incorporated IAQ best practices and design strategies for commercial building professionals into four sessions of its 2008 Greenprints Conference. In addition, with assistance from the Greenguard Environmental Institute, a nonprofit that establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, Southface performed eleven classroom trainings, including eight on college campuses located in five southeastern states. These were:

  • Emory University
  • Auburn University
  • Tennessee State University
  • University of North Carolina
  • Kennesaw State University
  • University of Georgia
  • Savannah College of Art & Design
  • University of South Carolina

Over 150 attendees at the 2008 Greenprints Conference participated in the IAQ-related sessions, and over the one-year term of the grant, Southface worked with 23 colleges and universities in the Southeast to improve indoor air quality.
