Southface offers a limited number of six-month internships suitable for college and university students and recent graduates wishing to pursue a career in the building sciences or sustainability field.

Program Description

Southface internships provide work that is both meaningful and challenging, in a supportive, friendly and collaborative work environment. Internship candidates should expect to commit six full months to Southface and be able to work full time (40 hours per week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend assignments). Interns work on a variety of assignments while at Southface, including:

  • Assisting on energy audits and building inspections

  • Giving facility tours and explaining building science and energy technologies to Southface visitors

  • Policy research

  • Preparing mailings, helping with database maintenance

  • Answering the Southface hotline and providing assistance

  • Occasional physical work related to light construction and building maintenance

  • Maintaining the Southface recycling and composting programs

  • Assisting with public relations, marketing, graphic design, technology, events, outreach at public forums and other tasks related to the intern’s specific skills

In addition, Southface offers interns the opportunity to participate in its classes and trainings on topics including building science, community and urban planning, local, regional and national sustainability issues, and more.

Eligibility

Southface internships are appropriate for recent college graduates or for upper-class students able to take six months away from campus for course credit. We actively seek candidates who are self-motivated and show a demonstrated interest in the environment.


Applications for Southface internships are accepted and reviewed year-round, and start dates are flexible.

Compensatory Package

Interns receive the following assistance:

  • A weekly stipend of $100

  • Shared co-ed housing when available

  • Transportation assistance

Applications for Southface internships are highly competitive. Please complete the online application form, then email it to internships@southface.org with an attached resume outlining your relevant experience and activities and cover letter explaining why you would like to intern at Southface. Intern application letters and resumes will ONLY be accepted through email.

Notification

If your application is accepted, you will be notified by Southface and invited to participate in a qualifying interview. Depending upon your location, your interview may be conducted by phone. Following your interview, Southface will contact you with a decision, and if you are accepted, we will discuss possible starting dates and other arrangements with you.
